Propolis Nature’s Natural Plant Health
Plants are a rich bioresource of beneficial chemical compounds which our ancestors in many various ways have used as a natural medicine (rongoa) over many generations.
So what is Propolis? Propolis resin is an aromatic plant exudate or secretion occurring on the surfaces of certain plants 🌱 .
This resin derives from photosynthetically produced carbohydrates that are broken down to produce the hundreds of complex chemical compounds within it.
Science is proving the overall significance of this resin as the plant’s protection for new buds and other vulnerable plant surfaces.
Our precious 🐝 bees collect this pure propolis resin from the plant surfaces found in our Nātive Ngahere (Forest) here in Tai Tokerau (Northland), Aotearoa (New Zealand) such as Kauri, Kanuka, Mānuka, Rewarewa and many many more 💕 as they know they can use its anti-infective and anti-fungal properties to help preserve the health of a hive.
CEO Blanche Morrogh with Raw Propolis from the hives in Ahipara.
Propolis in its pure form, comprises of hundreds of botanical compounds. Together, these form a complex chemical matrix that combine to produce its unique medicinal qualities such as, bioflavonoids, vitamins, minerals and organic acids that can help build immunity and fight off nasty infections.
During the hot summer months we harvest our Propolis from specially designed mats we place on our beehives during the honey flow (honey season).
We can achieve varying quantities of pure propolis resin that builds up amongst other hive material such as beeswax etc, meaning the percentage yield of pure propolis "Solids" will always vary from hive to hive and season to season.
To extract the Propolis we simply snap freeze the mats overnight, then twist or bang the mat inside a bag to release the propolis/wax etc which is then sent for laboratory testing to accurately measure the percentage of pure clean and health propolis resin Solids present.
We are proud to say here at Kai Ora our Propolis is independently tried & tested to ensure we are delivering you and your family nature’s best health options from New Zealand 🇳🇿
The word propolis is derived from Greek, in which pro stands for “at the entrance to” and polis for “community” or “city,” which means this natural product is used in hive defense.
Another name of propolis is bee glue. Due to its waxy nature and mechanical properties, bees use propolis in the construction and repair of their hives—for sealing openings and cracks and smoothing out the internal walls and as a protective barrier against external invaders like snakes, lizards, and so forth, or against wind and rain.
